TEXT / Services

My services are a mix of Design, Photography, Illustration and Creative Strategy activities. Whether it is in print, or in electronic form such as a website, all projects can draw on these areas.

ACTIVITES /

Design. Share ideas – Create – Develop – Produce. This is the basic design process. It is inspired by your vision for your business.

I design logos and items in printed and electronic form such as brochures, advertisments, stationery, packaging, display boards and websites. Such items are 'tools' for your business.

Everything your customer sees and uses should be 'by design'.

Photography and Illustration have the power to send an 'instant message' to the viewer so are important tools in graphic design. I produce certain styles of photography and illustration, but more often I will draw upon other professionals when developing imagery. I have a network of unique and skilled illustrators and my services include photo editing.

I photograph products, food, styled scenes, architectural interiors and exteriors, and landscapes.

Creative Strategy is looking at the bigger picture - developing the identity of your business (brand) and devising ways to strengthen it's position in the marketplace. The communication 'tools' we decide upon for your business become it's identity in the eyes of your customers. This service assists in the development of a new business, or to enhance an existing one.

IN PRINT /

Design of your business stationery and marketing collateral such as leaflets, posters, postcards, brochures and direct mail.

Other print based design includes large format display (for shop fits and exhibitions), packaging, signage, magazines, and advertising for newspapers, magazines, and billboards.

I have a pool of hand-picked printers and will source your print or liaise with your existing printer. I advise on quality vs cost and the options available to suit your situation.

ON THE WEB /

Design services for electronic devices include websites, Flash animation, 'e-flyers', CD-ROM/DVDs and touch screen display interfaces.

I can design, build, get your website online and train you to update it. I have described my website design service and collated some general information for those new to websites in my article Understanding Websites ...

TEXT / The Design Process

Each project I undertake follows a series of stages that make up the design process.

Together we will discuss the values and goals of your business and the design task at hand. We will develop a brief to inform the design. In this way, the final design product is integrated with your business strategy.

The typical stages of the design process are:
discussion to clarify the needs of your business;
research;
• discussion of the marketing strategy;
• creating the design vision or concept;
design;
delivery; and,
review.

You are involved and informed at every stage.

Consideration of your business identity is a key function in every step of the design process. This ensures a unique, tailored outcome.

Like every business, every project is unique so we will adapt this process to suit.

DISCUSSION /

Emphasising your values so we can create the Vision.

Our goal here is a design brief to guide the development of concepts and design. First we need to look at the detail.

What are you trying to achieve? What are your ideas for achieving this? Have you tried to achieve this before? What about it was successful, and what was not?

We will consider your product or service, where you sell, where the potential is and who your competition is. You will need to clarify who your customers are and who your potential customers may be.

Most importantly we will discuss how you expect your staff and the business as a whole, to relate to your customers. These values will become a strong part of each aspect of the design.

With all cards on the table, we can pick the most valuable which will help us reach our ultimate goal of the exposure and growth of your business. These will be the pointers that we need to focus on to create the concepts. At this stage we finalise the brief.

RESEARCH /

This is undertaken by everyone involved. Some questions we need to ask are 'What do I like the look of?' and 'Who are the competition?'. If you think it might be useful, keep it, even on a whim.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it? Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

MARKETING STRATEGY /

I work at the creative end of your marketing strategy.

You may already have a marketing strategy in which case the design project will build on it and enhance its outcomes.

Or, you may be currently developing a marketing strategy in which case the design project will contribute to the success of the task.

Or, you may be yet to develop a marketing strategy in which case the design project can provide the foundation and impetus for the development of a marketing strategy.

At this stage we may revisit and clarify the brief.

CONCEPT /

The Vision informs the Design.

With the outcome of our discussions as a guide, we can now let the ideas flow. Our creativity is informed by the values and goals we highlighted, so the solution will be a winner.

Back at the studio I will develop a series of concepts for discussion - the vision. In the case of developing a business identity, we will look at concepts for imagery, colour schemes, font styles and discuss the general look and feel.

DESIGN /

Through a process of drafting and review, circulated between us, we will refine the design.

When necessary I will call on freelance specialists such as illustrators or website database developers.

I design and build websites, and offer advice on website hosting. I offer the necessary training to allow you to update your website. I have compiled some information on website projects here ...

DELIVER /

I have a pool of hand picked printers if you don't already have your own, and can advise on quality with your budget in mind.

REVIEW /

The question has to be asked - 'Have we been successful?' A review completes the cycle as we revisit our intentions from the early stages.
